This text was originally composed by computer game designer Chris Crawford in 1982. When searching for literature on the nature of gaming and its relationship to narrative in 1997, Prof. Sue Peabody learned of The Art of Computer Game Design, which was then long out of print. Prof. Peabody requested Mr. Crawford's permission to publish an electronic version of the text on the World Wide Web so that it would be available to her students and to others interested in game design.

This document surveys computational approaches for producing computer animation. It is intended as a text for advanced undergraduates or for graduates. It is also useful for computer graphics programmers who want to learn the basics of computer animation programming. It does not address production issues in the actual commercial exercise of producing a finished piece of animation.

Michael Abrash's classic Graphics Programming Black Book is a compilation of Michael's writings on assembly language and graphics programming (including from his "Graphics Programming" column in Dr. Dobb's Journal). Much of the focus of this book is on profiling and code testing, as well as performance optimization. It also explores much of the technology behind the Doom and Quake 3-D games, and 3-D graphics problems such as texture mapping, hidden surface removal, and the like.

2nd Edition. This is the text of the second edition, published in 1992, out of print in 1997. Much of the material was also included in the 1st edition, which was published in 1980. Updates will be made to this online edition as I get the time to do it.

In 2000, Ari Feldman wrote a book called Designing Arcade Computer Game Graphics. Unfortunately, it was taken out of print (although copies still exist in the retail channel). Ari Feldman has been so kind to give me the right to distribute the book electronically. In this way all of you can learn about how to create graphics for your games.

The first part of this book focuses on mastering core tools: layers, selections, masks, and colorspaces. The second part builds on the first by presenting an in-depth treatment of touchup, enhancement, compositing, rendering, and image creation for the web. The following gives a synopsis of what you will find in each chapter.

This book is primarily for graphics programmers, but it's also for application programmers who need to become graphics programmers (if only for a little while). Although we didn't anticipate, in the first edition, that the book would be useful to graphics illustrators, we found that it was.
